The infamous Frank Freeman (proprietor of the now defunct Group 6 -
supplier of Saab Performance Accessories for many years) once said that
'the hardest thing you will do in life is wear out one of those little
Swedish motors'. The case for higher rpm operation being beneficial is
that the oil pressure is higher, and more oil gets splashed up on the
cylinder walls. The higher engine speed also increases the strength of the
film of oil in the bearings.

You are not going to damage the engine by driving it in the manner you have
described. Engines are damaged by poor maintenance (excessive oil change
intervals, coolant change intervals, overheating, etc.), running them hard
before the engine is near operating temperatures, or (for the turbos)
reving the engine just before shutting off the key or as soon as it starts.
