Air Conditioning Quit

The AC of my -92 9k CS quit working this morning. On a long trip last
weekend it still worked fine, cooling effort was good on a hot day.
After the trip I washed the car and the engine.

Yesterday I noted a hissing sound coming from the evaporator box area. I
took a look on the sight glass of the receiver-dryer and saw foam. The
compressor (Sanden 709) also seemed to be stuck on. After a few minutes
refridgent and oil were coming out from the over pressure relief valve.

This morning the compressor refused to start, I suppose due to low
pressure protection switch. I will take the car to an A/C specialist for
a check and refill but I would first like to know what caused the
compressor to stick on and the pressure relief valve to open?

TIA
Markus Jarvi
