Re: Wheel and Tire upgrade

I have upgraded wheels and tires on all my cars. The 9-5 wagon and the A4
quattro both have 17x8 wheels (BBS RK on the former and Milli Miglia 11-2
on the latter), both with Dunlop SP-9000 225/45/17. I had the A4q on the
track in mid-October and the difference between the stock wheel/tire
package, which is not bad (16x7 w/ 205/55/16 SP-8000s), and the +1 package
is well worth the extra bucks IMO. The turn-in response was crisper and
the car held in the turns much better than the other A4 quattros with the
stock wheels/tires. Braking seemed a bit better too, but that is more of a
subjective observation. Given that the Saab is front drive and tends to
understeer heavily (at least the 9-5 has heavy understeer), I'm not so sure
that the difference would be as noticable.

Not being sure where you live, you may or may not be able to get rid of
your stock wheels/tires. I would guess that most of the 215/45/17 tires
are Z-rated and, therefore, won't go in the snow. I won't even try
driving my A4q or 4000q (both of which are AWD) in the snow with the
Dunlops. The 4000q gets snow tires and the A4q sits in the garage. If you
live in an area where snow is common, you may need to hang on to your old
wheels.

In response to your question 'what do I get for my $500 or so?', it really
depends on how you drive.
