The 9000 engine is very rugged and will last a LONG time if it has been
maintained correctly. Unfortunately, if the oil has not been changed
every 3-5K and the coolant flushed every two years, the engine could
need quite a bit of work. I've had two (used) 9000s and both have had
the timing and balance chains replaced by 80K, the head gasket replaced
by 75K and various seals replaced. If you are planning on buying a
used engine, get the tech to check the chains before you install it in
the car and spend the extra bucks to replace the rear seal and other oil
seals.

I'd expect to replace the head gasket and the balance and timing chains
($1500 - $2000) on any used engine with 75K - 100K... On the plus side,
after the chains are replaced and the seals done, you may have an engine
that does fine for quite some time.
