Used 9-5s & Trionic Upgrades
Posted by pmatt - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=87 (more from pmatt - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=87) on Wed, 16 Apr 2003 00:12:42

I'm in the process of finding a replacement for my '88 9000T, which
at 174K or so is rusting out pretty badly and in need of more things
that I really want to put into it.

I guess I have narrowed down my choices to a 9-5 Aero (pretty
expensive!) or an SE-level 9-5, either of which would ideally be a
lower mileage off-lease vehicle. I've driven both recently, and
really think the low pressure turbo seems pretty tame next to the
Aero.

Abbott Racing offers a Trionic computer reprogramming upgrade that
turns the 9-5's LPT into a full-pressure turbo. It costs about $1K
with installation, and for the time being, you have to send them your
car's computer to get the job done. Abbott says they can do ANY 9-5,
regardless of the year. (They have a rep in Seattle, WA)

Saab offers the same kind of upgrade, but only for 9-5's from 2000
and forward. Advantage is that you get a Saab part, warranty and
support from your local dealer.

Has anyone upgraded their 9-5's LPT engine to the full pressure
specs? Results? Would you look for a 2000 9-5 (in place of a 1999)
just to get the Saab brand upgrade?

Lastly, I've investigated used 9-5's in parts of the US where it
doesn't snow much (Florida, Georgia, etc.), as I live in the frozen
tundra of Upstate NY and don't want a car that's seen too much road
salt. Dealers have told me to avoid places like south Florida, as the

heavy sun tends to wear the leather interiors and the presence of
corrosive humidity, salty air from the sea might also be a problem.
Is this likely? (There seem to be some decent prices on used, off-
lease 9-5's in Florida, though...)

TIA for your help.

Cheers --- Phil Matt
