Trionic Coil Ignition Module & Wheel Turning Whine

Just had to replace the Coil module, the red piece that sits in the valley
between the cams on the head, contains the coils for the spark plugs, and
is a sensor that is part of the Trionic system. Car is a 96 900 SET, has
less than 30,000 miles but is just a couple of months out of warranty so we
got to foot the bill. Mechanic, who worked on it, said its a common
problem in his experience. Also said the dealer in SF had 23 in stock
which would indicate a high failure problem with this part. To temper the
Mechanics experience, its a small town and not many Saabs especially new
gen., low mileage vehicles, so his experience is limited. Question is, is
this really a high failure item and, if so, should I stock up on one or two
the next time I'm in the mainland. Good news is the price has apparently
dropped from near a $1,000 to $300+. Could that be another sign of volume
replacement need. Its an easy replacement so might prevent getting
stranded in the weeds and a prudent investment if I can count on this
happening again.

Second problem, wife noticed a whirring sound after the steering moves past
center when making a turn. Happens when the wheel is turned, stops when
the wheel stops. Problem with the power steering pump, steering rack, or
what? Sure wish I could get this car up on my ramps, would make working on
the car a lot easier.
