The operative word is *relatively* i.e., *relatively low-tech as compared
to the Trionic computer.*  The 'knock sensing' (and fine-tuning the
fuel/air ratio) is performed inside the computer, using the ionization
potential of the post-combustion mixture as measured through the spark
plug.  Yes, the DI cassette is more than 4 coils and a connector.
