It sounds like the shaft that connects the temperature control dial on the
dash has seperated from the heater control valve. I remember fixing
something behind my dash, and having a bear of a time getting the valve,
shaft and dial connected. A good test of this theory is if the temperature
dial spins unusually freely, suggesting it's not connected to the valve.
