It scares all of us! that's why we work through the driver's side speaker
hole! There is a short rod between the temperature control knob and the
heater valve. More experienced folk will just reach in and hook the rod
up, but as a novice it might be worth your while to remove the knee bolster
so you can actually see what you're doing. One bolt inside the ash tray
compartment, and one on each side just in front of the door frame. I think
there's the trim under the steering column to remove, too, but it's been a
while...

If the dial is not connected, it's possible that one end or the other of
the connecting rod has bitten the dust.
