Check Engine Light

My 96 Saab 9000 CS has started getting a solid Check Engine light, and
after two trips to the mechanic, the problem remains undiagnosed.

The first time, the mechanic could not pull up any code, but the light
went away after he attached the instruments. The next day the light
was back on.

The second time, the mechanic initially did not find any code, but
later came up with P1652. This code apparently is not relevant for my
car.

A few times the light has gone out, but now again for the last few
days, the light is on solid, whenever the engine is running.

Any suggestions on what can be done here? The mechanic had asked me to
bring the car back in, but had also expressed frustration about not
being able to find the right code associated with the light. He has
tried pulling the DTC's with some instruments and also with a laptop
computer.
