Not really. There's a clutch mechanism that slips when the resistance to
mast movement gets too high. The slipping is in discrete steps, and each
step sounds like a knocking sound. It's perfectly normal to hear between 1
and 3 slip steps after full extension, and after full retraction. This
means the motor is being run for the correct length of time to get the job
done.

To understand this better, you can make the antenna try to retract while
firmly holding it in it's fully extended position. You'll probably hear up
to 10 knocks before the motor turns off. Same if you firmly hold the top of
the mast down (fully retracted) while your helper turns on the radio...

This isn't really a possibility. The top segment of the antenna has a
flexible toothed plastic tail attached to it. The tail meshes with some
gears inside the drive unit, and gets wound onto a plastic drum when the
mast is retracted. The most common failure mode (besides snapping the mast
off while extended in an automatic car) is embrittlement and breakage of the
toothed tail.
