Shifter Linkage Flex Joint

I was driving our 1992 9000 (5 speed) yesterday, doing some errands.
When I went to leave one store, I could not get the transmission into first
or second gear. At first, the shifter would not move forward or backward
when it was held over to the left side of the shift gate, then it would move
smoothly, but I get third or fourth gear. Now, the shifter moves easily
into all six positions, but the car only shifts into third and fourth
instead of first or second. When you move the shifter over to the right,
you get third and fourth and 5th and reverse. Does anybody have any
ideas? I recently changed the oil and when I checked it this morning, it is
nice and clean and at the correct level. I am hoping this is a shift
linkage problem. Could this problem be due to broken engine mounts? If the
engine has shifted a little, maybe the linkage isn't aligned correctly.
Maybe this is related, but about 20 miles earlier in the day, while we
were stopped in traffic, we got hit from behind in the right rear taillight.
The impact drove the car forward pretty good. Initial estimate is about
3000 dollars. Thankfully, SAAB installed headrests at all the seats. Could
this impact be related to the shifting problem?

Earlier today I wrote in and described a problem with the transmission in
our 1992 9000 (5 Speed) where it would not shift into first or second. The
problem is the rubber and metal flex joint in the shifter linkage. When you
move the shifter over to the left to get into first or second, part of the
joint is broken and just opens up and does not rotate the shaft. When you
push the shifter to the right, the broken part of the joint work just fine.
I put a nylon wire tie around it to hold it together and everthing works
fine. I have ordered a new flex joint and it will be here in a couple of
days. Has anybody ever changed one of these? Is it straight forward? Is
it possible to do with the car on ramps? It looks cramped up there. Thanks
for any info.
