Thanks for the reply, but there were a few misunderstandings, as noted
below.

>So basically, they'll charge you nearly $2000 to cover what, exactly?

ANSWER: Well, it turned out to be $3800 worth of parts and labor. Saab
covered the parts ($2000), and I anted over for the labor. It turns out
a major plastic component of the CHAIN TENSIONER had snapped off, so the
chain was flapping and was doing major damage, i.e., chewing away at one
of the sprockets (I've got all the salvaged parts),

>You've had the car for about four years, and only 27,000 miles,

CORRECTION: 47,000 miles

>that's 6,750 per year. If you continue to drive it at that rate, at
>the end of 7 more years, you'll have 74,000 miles, which is about

WE'LL BE AT 74,000 miles in about three years.

>The really major things (motor, transmission, etc) are very reliable on

RESPONSE: I KNOW. We've had SAABS since my brand-new 99LE in 1974.

>I presume that you garage the car, and keep it out of the snow?

WE TRY.

If you are caring for the car well, and don't plan on driving it more
than you are, I would save the cash (maybe open a 'car trust fund'),
>get the one major service the car will need in about 4 more years,
>and not worry about it.

IF THE NEWER SAABS have plastic parts in the engine... But that appears
to be rare.
