Transmission Fix

Since I bought my '97 900SE Conv. at only 17,000mi, it's always had a very
stiff clutch pedal. Over the past two years, the transmission has begun
making a noise during deceleration while in gear. My local dealer said that
the stiff clutch was normal for the cable design and if I wanted it to be as
light and smooth as my wife's 9-3, I had to buy a post '98 model with a
hydraulic clutch. They also felt that the noise was a little louder than
normal, but not a big deal.

So, I finally got fed up and took it into another dealer, SAAB of Framingham,
MA. I have an extended warranty, so I decided to let them figure it out. On
the test drive, the mechanic immediately said that there was a problem with
the clutch and that it should be light and smooth. He felt that problem was
a combination of the cable and the throwout bearing. He said that there is a
new design part for the throwout bearing. The noise, he said, was caused by
a bearing failure in the transmission.

So, after a week in the shop, I picked it up. They put in a new clutch,
bearing and pressure plate. And rebuilt the transmission. The reverse
synchro was in bad shape, the fork and bearings were replaced.

Here's the good part: The clutch is now identical to my wife's 9-3! Light
and smooth. And the tranny is now quiet. I never thought that I could be so
happy with the way that the car drives. Best part is that after the warranty
coverage, I only had to pay $400 for the clutch parts! Transmission failure
covered everything else under the warranty.

So, if you have a difficult clutch, it might not be ok.
