Acceleration & Readling Lights

My '97 Saab Turbo convertible (stickshift) accelerates like a fiend in
first and second gear, but in third through fifth, I can only accelerate
gradually. Not a problem during 98% of driving time, but... If I floor the
accelerator to pick up speed quickly, say, during a passing maneuver, the
rpm meter surges past 5,000, then falls back, with no appreciable
acceleration. After about two, three seconds, acceleration begins to
happen, but as I said, gradually, not with the desired jolt. The delay is
way too long to be attributed to the infamous turbo lag. Anyone know what's
going on here?

Another (much more minor) puzzling factor about my car is that I've never
been able to figure out how to turn the backseat reading lights on and off.
They're built into the side panels, but I see no buttons to operate them...
The manual yields not a single clue.

Many thanks,

Rogier van Bakel
