Power Steering

I am *certain* I've read of this phenomenon somewhere before, but
assiduous trolling of google and the Saab sites so far has left me
emptyhanded.

I wonder why my '85 900 Turbo sometimes has the power steering 'go dead'
on me; at times it doesn't feel like I'm getting any boost at all.
Then, suddenly, and sometimes scarily, the boost will 'take' and I have
to quickly quit trying to wrest my way around whatever corner it is I'm
negotiating.

This phenomenon comes and goes randomly, and is marked always by great
stiffness followed by great ease.

Most of the time the feel I would describe as 'OK,' with far less ease
than in the incidents described above but far more ease than when it's
acting up.

I am not looking forward to having it happen on ice, I can say that for
sure, although so far I haven't ever had it make me sweat.

I would like to understand what's going on though, and thanks in advance
to anyone who might be able to steer me to some information :-)

p.s fluid and belts seem fine.

B.
