The fix: New fuel injection relay. Details follow.

Several weeks ago I posted about a problem with my '88 9000T auto
refusing to restart when hot and cutting out when hot (normal
operating temperature, not boilover hot). Along the way I replaced
a suspect ignition coil, ignition module (amplifier), and electrical
portion of the ignition switch. I was ready to replace the Hall
Effect sensor in the distributor when something that a guy named
Fred (posting as 'brandybunch') wrote made me go and prove to myself
that this was the right thing to do. Here's what Fred wrote:

You are right about the Hall signal, however, you should be
able to prove it there or not using the prescribed method from
the tech manual. My only point in telling you this is that I
have shotgunned problems in the past and spent allot of time
and money inappropriately. With a few simple checks you may
be able to refine your symptoms down to a most exact cause.

I really did set out to prove that buying a distributor repair kit
was the right thing to do.

I connected a voltmeter across the battery terminals to see if
there was some intermittent problem there causing the cutout, and
another DVM to the Hall Effect sensor signal pins at the ignition
amplifier. Finally, I put a timing gun on the HT lead. Then I
ran the engine until it cut out (about 5 minutes). Results:
voltage always around 13.4V, Hall Effect signal and spark always
present when attempting to restart unsuccessfully.

Ahah! I said. It must be the fuel pump. But, being lazy and cheap,
I decided to first expose and wiggle the fuel pump relay in the
glovebox to see if that might be the problem; and it turned out
that each time I wiggled it when the engine was running, it cut
out. But the problem wasn't the FP relay, it was the identical FI
relay right next to it, and my less than slender fingers were
bumping it each time I wiggled the FP relay. Wiggle, click, cut
out. Wait until I could restart, wiggle, click, cut out. Replacing
the FI relay (approximate cost, $10) solved the problem. Thank
you Fred. And thank you also to all the a.a.s. and saabnet folks
for your ideas in trying to help me solve this problem.
