Droopy Hatch Shocks

After years of not being annoyed with the droopy hatch of my 87 9000 I
finally picked up a replacement set of hatch shocks from the dealer. Decided
to ge NEW on this item, even.

Easy install, took minutes, but virtually NO DIFFERENCE from the old ones.
Still a very heavy hatch to lift which will drop from fully open to rest at
about half-open. Right on the noggin. Has been fine in the warm weather, but
that's long gone now, eh?

Tell me this can't be regular behaviour, but what else needs to be tweaked?
There are no springs on the hatch itself, just the shocks. I have no reason
to suspect that I didn't get the right part. Can the strength of these hatch
shocks be increased? (does one end screw to increase the resistance?)

Thanks,
-chris
