  I had the same problem when my '86 900S got to
around 200Kmiles.
  On my car, the source of the noise was  quite
simple:
   The hinge on the clutch pedal arm had gotten
so worn that the bushing for the hinge pin had
worn it into an oval/elliptical hole. Everytime
I shifted, the hinge pin shifted in the bushing,
producing a click.
  When the shifter similarly got worn to the point
that it was getting sloppy (I didn't even have
to pull up on the shift collar to go into reverse),
I had the mechanic braze in a new bushing into
the hinge. Well, he suggested it, I was willing
to put up with th click; for the incremental cost
it was worth fixing it.
   BTW, I had it done at an AAMCO place in Nashua,
NH. I was leery about going to ANYYHING named AAMCO,
but my mechanic told me that this particular franchise
was owned locally, and  did good work. He was right,
it worked for me.
