True, to some extent. However - an OEM may specify a particular setting
for new production but that doesn't mean they're going to inventory and
sell it as a service part.

OEMs have exactly the same pressures to reduce inventory carrying costs as
aftermarket suppliers, and in the case of something like shocks they won't
necessarily keep the part sitting on the shelf indefinitely (you wouldn't
necessarily want a set of shocks that'd been sitting on the shelf for ten
years anyway.) They'll order batches from the manufacturer as their
inventory runs down, and they may supercede earlier settings to later ones
or otherwise cut down the number of different calibrations they stock to
simplify ordering and inventory. So not only may the settings change, as
time passes they may not even be made by the same manufacturer.

Someone with access to parts data should be able to say how many different
model/year combinations Saab sells, say, 9000 front struts for. I'd guess
four, and wouldn't be surprised if it were fewer.

Once upon a time, looking at my 900 shop manual, I was quite surprised by
how *few* different spring rate/length combinations Saab used on different
models.

John.
