Re: Automatic Transmission Shifting

As you are undoubtedly aware, your car has a three-speed Borg Warner
automatic transmission. Because it lacks a fourth (or even a fifth) gear,
the third gear has to send the power to the wheels at any speed over 45 mph,
which in turn makes the engine run at a higher rpm, progressively with
vehicle speed (or the harder you depress the accelerator) because the engine
does not have a higher gear to shift up into. So in summary, your car's
shifting procedure is completely normal. Personally, I think this design is
suited only for city driving, because at higher speeds your (and my) gas
consumption increases significantly. I have a 1991 base 900 with the same
transmission and I drive about 55 miles a day at highway speeds (65-75 mph)
with an average of about 22 mpg (which is pretty lousy for a four-cylinder
car, if you ask me).
