New Saab Engine on Road

Autoweek (11/6/2000) editors said they drove a Saab 9-5 Aero with the
new prototype engine from Saab that uses variable compression. The
editors reported that the working prototype 'is something to behold.'
It takes a 1.5 liter engine and makes it have the same power output, on
demand, of a current 2.3-liter turbo by having the head pivot on a
hinge. This has big gains in gasoline and emission conservation. This
is the first I've read of the engine actually being driven by the
automotive press on the highway. 'Normally, a turbo-charged engine
running at 14:1 compression would just be waiting to blow up. But when
you can almost immediately lower that compression to 8:1, well, that's a
different story. The idea is that the amount of turbo boost in the
cylinder can be increased when the driver is mashing the gas pedal, but
decreased when he's just cruising along from Trollhatten to Murmansk.'
No word on when the engine might be available on production Saab cars.
