Gearbox Problems

I'm after some help here, but first a little bit of history...

My 1993 manual 9000 2.3T lost 3rd & 4th gear just under a year ago, so it
was out with the box, rebuild and new clutch & slave cylinder at the same
time. Once back in, I noticed difficulty getting in to 1st & 2nd (moreso
1st) when coming down through the box- it felt a bit like the sort of
resistance you get when the engine isn't running and you try putting it in
gear. The problem was worse when cold, subsidising as the
engine/transmission warmed up- it was also better in the summer. There were
no problems when stationary with the engine idling, the shift went in nice
and smooth. I had the rubber link replaced which helped slightly, but was
never really happy.

Then just before Xmas, it was time for a major engine-out rebuild, so the
garage agreed to send the box back for another rebuild. We also found a
fault on the clutch that was replaced under warranty. When I first picked it
up, the problem was even worse- almost to the point of being undriveable. A
new gearstick & selector & adjustment has helped slightly, but the problem
is still there. Sometimes it helps if whilst applying pressure to get in to
1st, I bring the clutch up to the point of biting. AFIK, it has conventional
(non synthetic) oil in.

Oh, and since the second rebuild, it seems to have developed a transmission
whine that is audible even when coasting in neutral, clutch in or out...

So, 2 questions really-
a) any offers on the cause of the difficulty of getting in to 1st/2nd and
b) what might be causing the whine?

Thanks in anticipation

Mark
