Valve Clatter

I'm having a valve clatter problem with my 1987 900S with app. 170,000
miles. It seems to have come on slowly, or possibly I just didn't notice
with the windows rolled up and the air conditioner on high!

Right now there's so much noise at idle with the hood up that it sounds like
a diesel! I've already tried removing all of the belts to make sure none of
the peripherals are the problem. Oil level is fine. I'm borrowing a
friend's oil pressure gauge this weekend to check the oil pressure, but
since I've been driving it this way for days, possibly weeks, I'm betting
it's going to be fine or it would have seized up by now. I'm thinking at
this point that I have one or more bad valve lifters, in which case I will
replace the whole set. My question for the collective is this: How can I
tell if I have just a few bad valve lifters, or if I have an oil supply
problem to the entire head? I have already tried pulling the valve cover
and checking those little pipes that feed the lifters for blockage - there
was none, and everything in the head seemed plenty oily. I guess I could
remove those pipes, fire it up, and see if oil comes out of the feed holes,
but I think the chain would sling oil all over the place. Is there another
way? How do the pros diagnose a problem like this?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer!
