Our '87 900S, with the 16V engine, had vented rotors. The base model 900 for
'87 was solid. If your '86 900S is a 16V, I would guess it has vented
rotors. Easiest way to check is to remove one of the front wheels and look
at the rotor. The circumferential edge should have openings, separated by
small 'bridges' of metal (among the crusty rust that tends to close up these
openings). These vents are in the 'volume' of metal between both inner and
outer surfaces that are swept by the pads (or rivets in your case!). The
vented rotors are thicker, hence the pads are slightly thinner. I was able to
source a set at CAP (Consumer Auto Parts) for $50 each, and was pleasantly
surprised to find that they were made by Brembo! And even more surprised to
have the small locating screw come out without a hassle after 15 years of
service!
