I have a '97 900S and it has been a disaster.  Numerous systems and parts
have failed and the rattles, creaks and shudders are ridiculous.  My kids
are very derisive about this - it's far worse than my old humble Mercury
Sable.  The windshield also seems like it has been sandblasted and is badly
pitted.  I'm at the point of giving up on SAAB.

On the other hand I did have a 2000 9-3 as a loaner during one of the many
repairs on my 900.  Other than the grey dash - yuck - it seemed much, much
better than the '97 900.  It seemed tighter and handled well.  I liked
numerous touches such as radio controls on the wheel, intermittent wipers
and the ability to keep my cell phone on the car's electrical system
without the headlights staying on.  The 2.0 turbo is also a lot smoother
and sprightly than my 2.3.  I can't get over how much smoother it is - the
2.3 causes the whole car to shudder when cold or when the a/c cuts in while
the car is at rest.  This does not help the rattles at all.

However, a w/e was not long enough to tell whether reliability would be
problem.  My 900 was also pretty quiet for its first few months so it's
possible the rattles will occur on the 9-3 as well.

I would go for the 9-3 if I had a choice.  As for me, I'm dumping the 900
as soon as the lease is up and I expect that its replacement will not be a
SAAB. Unfortunately my experience with SAAB has been disheartening.
