5th Gear Downhill Check Engine Light

1992 9000T, manual.

My check engine light came on four or five times during a recent trip
through the Sierra Nevada, but went out after 20 seconds at most. In
analyzing the situation, I realized it occurred only on long, fairly steep
downhill stretches where I was coasting with my foot off the accelerator.
(FWIW, I was up at least 5000 ft, and had just filled the tank with 92
octane.) On two occasions the light went out just two or three seconds after
I downshifted to fourth.

The light has never come on in my usual sea-level city driving.

Suggestions? I've had to replace the radiator, the harmonic balancer, and
retrofit the a/c since January, and on my post-dot-com wages, another major
failure and I'll have to treat it like a horse: take it out back, close my
eyes, and shoot.
