If you recently did a coolant/thermostat change yourself, you have used an
incorrect thermostat. If someone else did this service for you, take the
car back and get them to put in the CORRECT thermostat.

The mere fact that your temp-guage goes ABOVE 50% in winter weather should
make you worried. Imagine what'll happen in 100-degree-F summer heat !

I truly believe that a lot of SAAB 16V overheating, head-warping and
head-gasket-failiure cases are partially the result of using cheap crappy
thermostats.

This would be the Waxstat 82degC unit, sold by SAAB dealers for about twenty
bucks. It is easily identifiable by the presence of a small bleeder hole,
which should be oriented towards the valve-cover when the thermostat is
installed in the head.

Part number is 88 17 538.

You can further protect your car from potential overheating by installing a
low-temperature radiator-fan switch, while your coolant is partialy drained
for the thermostat replacement. SAAB does not sell such a switch, but it is
available from Townsend Imports.

Part number 823959481D
SWITCH THERMAL FAN SAAB 2 WIRE 77- 82 DEGREES COOL
$9.20

It is so cheap and easy to keep your SAAB running cool. That's why it is so
sad to see so many that are serviced with inappropriate parts !
