Re: Water Noise

The sloshing noise almost certainly is water between the inner and outer
body panels, most likely below the rear windows. I had/have this problem
on my 91 900SE Convertible. I assume it starts with the failure of aging
rubber weather sealing to keep out the water. (This also could lead to the
water in the footwell.) If you lower the top and lower the rear windows,
you can shine a flashlight (torch, based on your use of 'petrol') down and
see the water. If you have long, skinny arms, you probably can reach down
and feel it.

I don't have either the Haynes or Bentley manuals, but I have been told
that there is a complicated system of drain hoses and check valves that
become stopped up. This apparently can be remedied somewhat by poking a
stiff wire through the appropriate drain hose -- most easily done while the
car is on a lift. I was unable to do anything crawling around under the
car, but the dealer drained it for no charge, so it can't be very difficult
or time consuming. This did not prevent water from accumulating after the
next heavy rain and/or car wash, but it now drains out after 10 mins or so
instead of remaining indefinitely. Alternatively, you probably could siphon
or pump out the water from above with the top down.

A definitive fix probably would require removing the inner upholstery
panel, which in turn requires removing the rear seat and the rear seat
back. I haven't attempted this.

Remove the side panels beside the rear seat and see if the water is in the
fender. My hatchback leaked water at the top of the rear side windows and
it ran behind the panel and collected in the inner fender and rocker.
