Re: Stereo Install

I've had similar symptoms with my '97 9000CSE's unit--I think they started
using this stereo configuration in '94, at least as an upgrade option). It
played for a while, then cut out, then sometimes back in. What my technician
found was that the control line from the cassette unit to the Harmon Kardon
amp under the seat (it turns on the amp) wasn't working properly--first he
replaced a transistor in the head unit that controls the signal, but it blew
again pretty quickly. He traced back upstream to a zener diode that's bad.

Before he found that problem, my technician replaced a capacitor in the amp,
plus an output IC in the cassette unit. Don't know if these were caused by
the problem described above, unrelated, or just unnecessary attempts at
repair.

The unit's not back in the car yet, so I'm not sure the problem's totally
solved, but maybe this info will help your technician. I've also heard that
you can send units to Clarion for reasonable-rate repairs--that may be the
best bet--especially if what you have are intermittent cutouts caused by
cold-solder joints. Unfortunately you probably can't also send them the
Harmon Kardon amp in order to troubleshoot the entire system.

Good luck!
