According to the SAAB service literature, NEVER. (yeah, right!)

> Did these cars all come with synthetic oil?

It wasn't until 1998 or so that Saab Synthetic Stuff (let's call it SSS)
made it's appearance in SAAB 5-speed gearboxes. The retrofit procedure
applies earlier cars, but a flushing procedure is mandatory, as SAAB
insists that SSS is incompatible with motor-oil or traditional
gear-lubricant, dino or synthetic.

First of all, you'll most probably fin that there's no drain-hole to get
the old oil out. If you insist on getting it out, it must be sucked out
through the speedo-sensor hole. I have done this successfully on our '93
CSET. I am a fan of Redline MTL tranny lubricant, so that's what I used
for the refill. No flushing was necessary as Redline MTL is reportedly
fully compatible with all motor oils and gear lubricants. Synchro action
improved noticeably within a matter of hours, as compared to the 8-year-old
10W30 fill.
