You can change the heater valve yourself if you're mechanically inclined.
Since they fail so regularly I would certainly recommend using a brand new
part from your dealer or supplier. For instructions, visit the classic
900 heater valve FAQ at:

Yes, you can do it yourself, but it's a bit of a pain...

The valve is behind the instrument cluster, and you have to access it from
both the speaker hole in the dash and from underneath. You can trace the
linkage from the heater controls to the valve itself.

I've done it. It's a straightforward job, but the bolts are very awkward to
get to.

I've replaced the heater valve on my '83 900. To get a feel for whether you
want to do this job your self, I would suggest you remove the left front
speaker cover and disconnect the wires from the speaker. The valve is
mounted on the firewall. At this point you will be able to see that the hard
part of the job is to gain access to fasteners that connect the valve to the
heater core.

The process for replacing the heater valve is described on p 854-3 in Saab
900 16 Valve Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. If you
plan to do your own work, Bentlley is indispenseable.
