Well, I've re-subscribed to this list because now I have a problem.

My wifes car ('84 900 Turbo) died for no apparent reason the other day. We
had towed it over to a relative who owns a lube shop (and is a mechanical
genius with domestic vehicles) but, after several days of trying, even he
couldn't figure this monster out. The only certified SAAB mechanic in
southern Idaho (Mike Highland) lives/works about 30 miles away from here
(at Hirning Pontiac/GMC in Pocatello) and we have no way to get the car to
him (yet).

Here's a rundown of what we tried:

1) Fuel pressure. Yup, plenty of it at the fuel filter - this shouldn't be
the culprit.
2) Spark. NONE! and I mean none at the plugs or the coil output.
3) Coil checked out to be good but may need to be replaced anyway.
4) Ignition module. Mikey let me borrow his 'spare' module to check - still
no go - we put the old module back in. From what I found on the Internet,
SAAB used about 13 different modules - what's up with that?

We started doing some research on the Bosch K Jetronic ignition system with
the Hall Effect transducer in the distributor. We tried to perform the
tests on the Hall Effect transducer but the book said to look for a
terminal 'P' on the module - there is no terminal 'P' - at least none that
we could find. Here's what we did find (which may not be accurate since
Dan's meter can't read .4 volts (400 millivolts) - mine can so I'll need to
dig it out from it's hiding spot):

Between pins 6 & 3 on the module (air gap test) we were getting 0 volts
instead of .4 (again, inadequate meter) and we were getting 9 volts instead
of 4 volts. Between pins 5 & 3 on the module, we were getting 14 volts
instead of 7.5 volts.

We suspect the Hall Effect transducer but, we can't figure out how to get
the damn thing out of the distributor to really do a check on it (let alone
replace it at $120 US).

Many thanks go out to Bob Alpert for the help he's already offered.
Anybody have any other suggestions? Are we on the right track? The car is
home now so I can do my own tests on it.

Now, on to the unrelated question. After reading about the Hall Effect
ignition, I discovered that Volkswagon uses what's called an 'Idle
Stabilizer' which sends a pulse to the ignition module to juice the idle up
whenever the idle drops too low to keep the car from dying. This SAAB
really needs something like that but it doesn't appear to have one. Could
one be retrofitted to the SAAB without causing any harm?

Thanks in advance...

Terry Warren
