There is a lithium battery in these radios - at least there is one in my
1991 9000 radio. There is one in the EQ too. These batteries last
about 5 or 10 years (YMMV) depending on how often they are disconnected
from the power in the car, and when they go dead, exactly this type of
thing can be expected to happen. If you open the radio, you should see
a coin shaped device soldered in and standing up from the circuit board
just under the LCD tuning display on the right front side of the radio.
I haven't replaced mine, so I don't know if the radio will permantly
forget its settings while the battery is being replaced.

BTW, the tape deck went bad on my radio. I contacted Clarion and gave
them the part number (Saab # 02 47 098; Clarion # PU-9206D91) and was
told that they would not accept it for repairs because parts are no
longer available. The gave me the contact information for an
independant repair company on the east coast, who had exactly the same
response. Tossing it from a tall building and watching it crash may be
the only entertainment value left in this radio.
