Low Brake Pedal

I just replaced my front brake pads and left front brake caliper (87
900s). Now when I drive the car, the brake pedal is at the right height,
but doesn't do anything until I push it down very near the floor. The
brakes do work however, as I've been driving the car for the past two
days, but it's obviously not right, and needs to be fixed. Some other
thoughts/ questions:
- The pedal doesn't feel particularly 'spongy'.
- There is only one parking brake cable to the right front wheel (the
left is not attached - never has been, never fixed it)
- I bled the system, but never got any air from the rear calipers, even
though I did empty the reservoir. Did I bleed them long enough?
- Is it better to bleed with the car running, or off?

Any thoughts or ideas as to why the pedal should go so low are
appreciated.
