Thought I'd give an update on my car.

After a few days of agonizing & looking around to see what else was
available, I decided to have my car repaired. Seems that I definitely
trashed the pinion bearing & housing. Seems Saab made it out of some sort
of cast material & later changed it to a billeted type.

Anyhow, here is the list:

1. Used Tranny out of a wrecked 900 S (Unsure what year, But it has the
oil dipstick tube & 8 valve non-turbo motor) Anyone hazard a guess?

2. New Saab Clutch Kit. (slave, pilot bearing & other stuff) This is pretty
interesting , has a large spring with a rubber cover?? The Mech. says these
are excellent.

3. Replace Crank Bearing seal.

4. Set of used Turbo Shocks & replaced A/C Evaporator w/ newer style
(plastic cover) The line going to the compressor had broken right where it
goes into the unit & was unrepairable. Being that the engine was out of the
car, this seemed to be the time to do it.

5. Various stuff like new Alt. mount bushings, gaskets & seals & fluids &
oils & Air/Oil Filters. All filters & parts were Saab.

The cost w/ labor & all was VERY reasonable. More than I could really
afford, but I think I got a great deal. If your in the Southern Missouri
area, look up Taliaferro Saab, ask for John he's a great guy. If you really
want to know how much, you can e-mail me off list.

My old tranny was bad for so long that I forgot what a nice car this can be
at highway speeds. The old Tranny would thrum thrum thrum at speeds over 60.
I used to crack a window, or it would be unbearable. This is super quiet.
Even on a cold morning like today, the trans shifted right into 2nd NO
balking or grinding. Trans feels great, syncros are in great shape & it
feels tight, no more whiplash & jerkiness.

***NOW TO MY QUESTIONS.

Were the Turbo & Non Turbo Trannys & ratios identical? This feels a bit
taller.

What year did Saab make the 8 valve motor & manual with the Fill/Dipstick?

What year did Saab improve on or change the cast pinion bearing housing?

I ask because the Mech. wasn't too sure about all the above details. I'd
like to know just for posterity.

Thanks for all your help & messages, on & off list.
