What you're looking at there is the filter. The pump is inside the tank.
Remove the floor in the hatch area (two fasteners hold it in place it it's a
3-door) and pull up the 8' round metal cover, left side of the car, which is
now exposed (the smaller one on the right is for the gas gage sending unit).
Inspect the top of the fuel pump. There are two lines (supply and return)
which have O-ring seals on them and the electrical feedthrough for the pump
itself. There is also a large O-ring which seals the whole assembly into the
tank. Any and all of these can leak and cause the odor you refer to.
