Back in the 70's when gas prices shot up, I remember how folks laughed
at me when I bought a small economical car.  Six months later they
weren't laughing anymore when they couldn't give away their land
yachts.  I'm still amazed at how something that's as fun to drive as my
900 turbo gets 30+ mpg on the highway, and even better around town.

Today, we are depleting known oil reserves at a rate faster than new
ones are being discovered.  Within the next decade or two world oil
output is going to peak, then begin to decline.  Us guys and gals will
probably have all the petroleum based fuel we need in our lifetimes,
albeit at a price, but at some point in the future the remaining oil
reserves will become too valuable as chemical feed stocks to simply burn
up in heat engines.  I'm looking forward to fuel cells, personally-
equal or greater performance than today's cars, twice the mileage from a
renewable fuel source, virtually no pollution and almost no
maintenance.  I will miss that sport exhaust growl, however...  As for
what we're going to do about aviation fuel, and it's already at
$2.50/gal., who knows.
