I have a 1996 900. I mounted my cell antenna on the passenger end of
the front windshield, also for cosmetic reasons and shorter wiring.
My first antenna howled so much I kept looking in the mirror for the
flashing red/blue lights!

The antenna mast that howled was the type with a coil in it, sort of
like a large spring. I replaced it with anther mast that I had which
fortunately fitted the already cemented threaded mount. This mast had
an enclosed pod or coil, ostensibly to improve reception. I have not
noticed if it really does that, but it sure did eliminate ALL
howling. I believe Radio Shack has that type of mast - just be sure
it has the same thread as your mount, of course.
