Hi Derek;
About the only piece of mind that I can provide is that you are not alone.

My '94 V6 is suffering the same (if not worse) ailments. My instrument
panel is dead more than 50% of the time I drive the car, and has been for
some time. It started as yours did, with the guages dropping and spiking,
but has gotten progressively worse. Doing some research on the TSN bulletin
board yielded some suggestions, and found some others with the same problem,
but nobody has, to my knowledge, documented a definitive fix.

I've heard that it could be the MIU (Main Instrument Unit, aka instrument
panel), the ECU (Engine Control Unit, on the right side of the passenger
footwell), and/or the ignition switch. I haven't replaced any of them, nor
brought it in for diagnosis. At least not yet... I'm sure it will be
expensive, so I'm holding off. I did pull the instrument panel out (not
really that difficult a job, but would cost an arm and a leg for the shop to
do it and put it back) and check connections - nothing apparent. Ignition
switch was my leading candidate, since it seems to me that the instrument
panel 'thinks' the car is not running - mostly because the odometre stops
counting when the gauges die, and because when the gauges come back to life,
the panel reacts as though being started (all lights come on, including INFO
DISP, low fuel, etc.). All this with absolutely no impact on driveability
(which to me rules out ECU). FYI, my SRS light is also on, but I don't
think it's related. It's been on for about 2 years, diagnosed as a driver's
side airbag problem. I'm not going to spend the thousands to replace that,
so I basically drive without airbags like thousands of other vehicles on the
road.

All this to say, PLEASE let me know what headway you make! I'll do the
same, since I'll probably take the car in within the month, since it's due
for a timing belt.

Good luck!!!
Scott.
