Bob, it's not the same company you knew in '71. Are they still offering as
factory option the same cheap Bosch fog lights they offered in the 70's and
80's? I'd day your answer is simply, 'cost.' Oh, the dealer will charge
you plenty for a 'Saab' replacement lamp, but I'd guess they have a
contract to get them rather cheaply from Bosch. Remember, you ARE dealing
with GM now.

I suggest you look for a top quality aftermarket fog light. Years ago, I
put Cibie 175's on our 1978 99 Turbo. There are probably decent lights
available from Hella.

A fog light should have a razor sharp top beam cutoff, and it needs to put
out more light than the currently fashionable tiny elliptical 'projector
lamps.' Those little elliptical reflector jobs may perform like a larger
conventional lamp (slightly larger), but they do NOT perform like a LARGE
lamp.

It has been years since I embarked on any serious research and shopping (I
miss Gene Shermeister, and wish I could order a Cibie series 95 Booster
Beam). I'm no longer convinced one needs the 120 degree horizontal pattern
of the Cibie 175 fog, but the clean 8 degree vertical wasn't bad. Off the
top of my head, I'd guess your most cost-effective solution would be the
largest Hella fogs you can comfortably fit.

Good Luck,

Lane
