Thanks to Keith of Melbourne, OZ for the quick response my last posting. I
have looked further into the problem and have the following findings.

Basically the problem is that the car refuses to boost past about one third
of the orange zone.

So I strolled into the Saab workshop at 9:00 a.m. this morning, bright and
early. Mechanic takes off every intake hose there is, checks for leaks,
none.

Mechanic tests the wastegate using a pump, works normally. Checks the
wastegate actuator, works fine. Takes off the wastegate actuator rod, but
decides not to bypass the effects of the APC and leaves it at the same
length. He concludes its the APC solenoid, the one above the radiator. He
has no parts. No problem running like that he says. Sure, at least till you
want to overtake that Honda Civic and barely manage... ;-) So hes going to
hunt for one for me.

So home I come. Solenoid ? Don't think so. It clicks when I turn the
switch. Searched the TSN archives, someone said degunk it. So I sprayed it
thoroughly with CRC 5-56 (Something like WD40). Not that much came out
besides a gram or so of dust. Tested it directly with 12V from the battery,
clicks beautifully. No clattering at idle like the archives say. Didn't
understand the blow through test, but from the left nipple blowing through
gives nothing. The middle and right ones appear connected.

Take it for a drive, no difference. So by now I'm getting frustrated. 3
hours in the workshop, and a cleaned solenoid later, nothing.

Okay, so by now I'm thinking maybe I've got basic boost. Maybe its the
entire APC unit. Out comes the rear seat, and my trusty no 8 spanner. Swap
the APC unit for one from a Saab 900 1984 CD, which incidentally, FLIES.
This thing spins its wheels if you kickdown at the right spot. ;-) So plug
it in, take it for a spin, no difference. Again.

Getting frustrated, I unplug the whole APC unit. Start it up just to try.
And it starts. Woohoo. Idle is burblier, seems like theres a small misfire
or something. Take it for a spin, no APC connected. Same power, just a (am
I dreaming ?) 'gurglier' sound.

So its not the solenoid, not the APC unit itself, not my turbo, not my
wastegate, not my solenoid. What is it ??

There were some archived messages about cruise control being a factor ? My
cruise control doesnt work. The speed set button just gives a click from a
relay somewhere, and then nothing. Doesn't hold the speed at all. I can
live with dead cruise control, if bypassing it is possible. I also don't
mind fixing it ;-)

Also, wheres the knock sensor ? And how do I make sure its working ?

Now maybe over here in Malaysia, where its permanently 30 degrees, my
wiring could have gone hard and cracked somewhere, and so everything no
longer works. The APC unit itself has only 13 contacts, 4 or 5 of which
arent connected to anything by that connector.

Maybe I can relocate the whole unit to under the bonnet and rewire it all ?
would certainly be easier than pulling all the wires out right ? Anyone got
the connections ? I should definitely try other things before such a
drastic measure though...

So what stone have my ameteur hands left unturned ?

And 2.5' or 3' exhaust mandrel piping ? Will it be okay if I go straight to
the muffler ? As long as its a legal volume, I don't care how loud it is
;-)Hell, some Mitsubishi Lancers over here have the wastegate vented
straight into the air and thats pretty dman loud ;-)

SO, in short, please help with this unboosting car.

Thanks in advance,
Lip Guan Teh
