I would be very suspicious when a transmission 'suddenly' develops an
internal problem after being removed and replaced for a clutch change -
fluid change or no. The only bad things that could possibly happen in a
short time from using the 'wrong' kind of transmission oil are:
1) damge to the seals, resulting in leakage
2) incompatibility with the pre-existing fluid (Red Line claims their
synthetic lubricants are completely compatible with natural petroleum
products - Saab specifies a flushing procedure when switching to their new
synthetic oil)
3) poor synchronizer performance cause by too-low friction characteristics
of the new oil, and
4) when switching from gearbox oils containing sulphurous EP additives (the
ones that smell like a mixture of skunk and tomcat) to those that don't
contain any, bearing damage can occur.

'4' should not be a problem with any 9000, NG900, 9-3 or 9-5, since such
fluids (Usually bearing the American Petroleum Institute (API) GL-5 rating)
have never been approved for use in them. '3' should not be a problem for
any product labelled 'Use This in Manual Transmissions', nor for natural
petroleum motor oils. As for '2', any Saab which has had Saab's synthetic
tranmsission fluid installed is supposed to have appropriately labelled
fill and drain plugs, and I recommend that vehicles which have been so
equipped use only Saab's fluid in the future.
