Power Antenna

It's antenna repair month around here. Just replaced the mast on
our 900T (had to disassemble the whole power unit to free up a
VERY corroded mast sleeve - not fun...) Old mast plastic toothed
drive was split, so a new mast easily resolved the issue.

Now it's my 9000T - all of a sudden the antenna won't budge. Made
an ugly noise on power up, a different ugly noise on power down, but
no mast movement.

Simple technique of trying to yank out the old mast with power
applied didn't work. OK. Disassembled this one and lo and behold,
the mast and it's plastic track are intact. Took an unreasonable
amount of penetrating oil and elbow grease to remove the mast and
free up the sections. The mast now moves freely.

Here's the problem: Put power unit back in car, put fuse back in fuse
panel, turned on radio, punched in security code. Radio comes on,
antenna motor makes loud noise on power up. So far so good.

Turned off radio, antenna motor stops making the 'up' noise, but
now there's no 'down' noise - no reverse drive to pull in mast. I'm
assuming the relay on the antenna mast tube isn't doing its thing.

Can someone explain to me how the power-up/down sequence works
for the antenna? I'm guessing that on power-up, the relay latches
and sends voltage to the antenna motor; on power down, it must
switch polarity and run the motor the other way, no? What makes
the motor stop running when the mast is fully down or up?

The relay looks like your garden variety 12VDC DPDT unit.

TIA for any suggestions.

Cheers --- Phil Matt
