This sounds a bit like a clutch problem I had on a few Fords. The clutch was
not releasing 100% which made it a real bear to get into reverse. (First
gear was occasionally a real fight as well.) In fact, I could get the car
into reverse, hold the clutch on the floor while shifting from reverse to
neutral back to reverse and still crunch gears. In both cases, the I believe
the clutch had warped and was still grabbing slightly even with the clutch
pedal on the floor. Both clutches were self-adjusting and had the friction
point at the very top of the travel. A new clutch fixed the problem on the
Mustang and I figured the Topaz was not worth fixing. I believed this was a
clutch design problem as I never actually wore out a clutch (including
201,000 miles on my Integra) and never had the problem on my Saab, VW, or
Acura.
