I recently had some severe starting problems, similar to those in thecurrent discussion. I tested the fuel pump, injectors, and cold startvalve in the recommended fashion, and found them all to be ok.I figured out that the starting problem was fuel related by performingthe following simple test: I removed the injectors but left the fuellines attached, and placed each injector into a 'ziploc' bag, so Icould see what they did. I plugged the holes in the intake manifoldwhere the injectors go so there would not be a massive vacuum leak.Then I got in the car, and tried to start it. Only a very small amountof gas came out of the injectors for about 30 seconds of cranking!Whatever was causing this brain-dead behavior must have been causingthe starting problem.The next thing to test was the warmup regulator. There was an articlein the Saab Club Newsletter several months earlier which talked abouthow the regulator could get 'stuck', and it showed how to take itapart and clean it up with carb cleaner or something. So, I opened upmy warmup regulator, and what did I find? It looked like an ancientrelic, completely fossilized inside, rusted frozen solid. Needless tosay, I had to replace it, and they're not cheap. I got the best pricefrom Import Motor Parts in Pueblo, Colorado. After replacing theregulator, all my troubles disappeared.In case you don't want to replace or repair the regulator right away,there were two kludges that helped the starting problem:1. I wired up the cold start valve to a manual switch inside the passenger compartment, and then when it didn't start, I could send some extra fuel in.2. I Inserted a small piece of wire between the airflow sensor and its housing, effectively raising its resting position slightly. This basically richened up the idle mixture (I think), and sent more gas in when trying to start the engine.
